Emperor Francis II, also known as Franz II, was the last Holy Roman Emperor and the first Emperor of Austria. As a historical figure, he is often referred to by a variety of synonyms, including Franz de Paula, Duke of Lorraine; Francis of Lorraine; Francis II, King of Hungary and Bohemia; and Francis I of Austria. These titles represent the various roles and positions held by Emperor Francis II during his lifetime. Despite his many titles and achievements, Emperor Francis II is perhaps best remembered for presiding over the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 and for laying the foundation of the Austrian Empire.
