Epidemic parotitis, commonly known as mumps, is a viral infection that affects the salivary glands. Some common synonyms for mumps include "infectious parotitis," "myxovirus parotitis," and "swollen glands." Mumps is highly contagious and spreads through airborne droplets from an infected person's cough or sneeze. The infection causes painful swelling in the glands, particularly the parotid glands located below and in front of the ears. Other symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, and loss of appetite. Vaccination is the best way to prevent mumps, and those infected should rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take pain relievers.
