Etanercept is a medication used to treat various autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. It works by binding to a protein in the body called tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), which is responsible for inflammation. Etanercept is also known by its brand name Enbrel. There are several synonyms for etanercept, including TNF blocker, biologic agent, anti-TNF therapy, and TNF inhibitor. These terms are often used interchangeably with etanercept to describe medications that function in a similar way to treat inflammatory conditions. Other common biologic agents used to treat autoimmune diseases include adalimumab, infliximab, and rituximab, among others.
