The external anal sphincter is a muscle that surrounds the anus and is responsible for voluntary control of bowel movements. Synonyms for this muscle include the external anal ring, anal striated muscle, and external anal sphincter muscle. It is also alternatively referred to as the voluntary sphincter, as it is under conscious control, unlike the internal anal sphincter which is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Other medical terms used to describe the external anal sphincter include the EAS, puborectalis muscle, and sphincter ani externus. Regardless of the terminology used, the external anal sphincter is an important muscle responsible for maintaining continence and preventing incontinence.
