The Family Cancridae comprises of various species of crabs that have many different common names. Some of the synonyms for Family Cancridae include Brachyura, crabs, true crabs and clawed lobsters. Brachyura is a Greek word that refers to armoured animals that have a short tail. While not all crabs have short tails, the term has been used to describe members of Family Cancridae. The term true crabs is also used to differentiate the crabs from other animals that are commonly called crabs but are not true crabs. Clawed lobsters refer to Family Cancridae members with large, strong claws. Regardless of the name, all members of Family Cancridae share similar physical characteristics, such as a hard exoskeleton, ten legs and specialized mouth parts, that make them well adapted to their environment.
