The Family Punicaceae is mostly known for its popular fruit, pomegranate. However, there are other plants that belong to this family such as the Persian ironwood and the Socotran pomegranate. This family is also referred to as the Pomegranate family or Punica family. The word "Punica" came from the Latin word "punicus" which means "of Carthage" as the Carthaginians were known for trading pomegranates. This family is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. Its members are known for their medicinal and culinary properties as well as their ornamental value in gardens and landscapes.
