Family Rhinobatidae encompasses a diverse group of cartilaginous fish commonly known as guitarfish or rhinobatids, which are found in coastal waters around the world. Several synonyms have been proposed for this family, including Trygonorrhina, Rhynchobatus, Breviraja, and Platyrhina. These synonyms are based on morphological and genetic differences between different groups of rhinobatids, which are often used to classify them into distinct genera or subfamilies. Despite these taxonomic differences, all rhinobatids have a similar body shape resembling a mix between a shark and a ray, with a flattened body and elongated snout. They are generally harmless to humans and can be found in a variety of habitats, from sandy and muddy bottoms to coral reefs and rocky areas.
