These fish live in both saltwater and freshwater and are found in all types of habitats, from coral reefs to deep ocean trenches. Some common synonyms for the Serranidae family include the bass family, the grouper family, and the sea perch family. Other less common synonyms for this family include the rockfish family, the jewfish family, and the hind family. Regardless of the name used, all members of the family Serranidae share similar physical characteristics, including a large head, large mouth, and several dorsal fins.
