Fatty tumors, also known as lipomas, refer to the growth of a benign mass of adipose tissue. Although the word "fatty tumor" is commonly used, the medical term "lipoma" is preferred. Other synonyms for fatty tumor include benign adipocytic neoplasm, adipose tumor, and encapsulated adipose tissue. Lipomas can occur anywhere in the body where there is fat tissue. Most lipomas are small and can be removed surgically if necessary. In some cases, lipomas will continue to grow and cause discomfort or cosmetically undesirable changes, so they may require removal. It is important to consult with a medical professional if there is any concern about a growth or mass.
