Ferroics refers to a category of materials that possess magnetic and/or electrical properties. There are several synonyms for the word ferroics including ferromagnetic materials, ferroelectric materials, and magnetoelectric materials. Ferromagnetic materials are those that exhibit strong magnetic behavior, while ferroelectric materials have spontaneous electric polarization and can be used in capacitors and other electrical components. Magnetoelectric materials exhibit both magnetic and electric properties and are being explored for applications in the development of future computing devices. Other related terms include multiferroic, which describes materials with both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties, and piezoelectric materials, which produce an electric charge under mechanical stress.
