Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder that causes bone formation to occur in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is also commonly referred to as stone man syndrome. The condition is caused by a mutation that leads to the growth and transformation of connective tissue cells into bone-forming cells. There are no known cures or treatments for this progressive disorder. Other synonyms for Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva include myositis ossificans progressiva, ossifying fibromuscular dysplasia, and progressive osseous heteroplasia. Despite these varied names, the condition remains a devastating and little-known disease with profound effects on the quality of life of those affected.
