A floor-walker, sometimes called a shop-walker or store-walker, is a person who walks around a store or shop to monitor and assist customers. The term originated in the 19th century when department stores were becoming popular, and employees would literally walk the floor to ensure that customers were not shoplifting. Other synonyms for a floor-walker include a sales associate, greeter, clerk, customer service representative, and retail assistant. In some stores, the position may be called a floor manager or team leader. Regardless of the title, the primary responsibility of a floor-walker is to provide excellent customer service and maintain a safe and welcoming shopping environment.
