Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is a medical procedure where microbiota from healthy donor stool is transplanted into the gut of a diseased recipient. It is also referred to as fecal bacteriotherapy or fecal transplant. Synonyms for FMT include microbiota transplantation, fecal microbial therapy, stool transplant, gut flora transplantation, and bacterial fecal transplant. These terms are all used to describe the same procedure which has been shown to be effective in treating various conditions such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infections, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). FMT is a relatively new but growing field with ongoing research exploring its potential benefits in other health conditions.
