Forced-labor camps, also known as labor camps, prison camps, or work camps, are facilities where prisoners are compelled to do hard labor under difficult conditions. Some other synonyms for forced-labor camps include concentration camps, internment camps, gulags, re-education camps, and corrective labor colonies. These terms refer to places where prisoners are held against their will and are forced to work for punishingly long hours. In many cases, the prisoners are subjected to inhumane treatment, including torture and starvation, making the experience a form of punishment rather than rehabilitation. Regardless of the name used to describe them, forced-labor camps are universally recognized as a gross violation of human rights.
