The term "forty niner" is historically used to describe the thousands of miners who traveled to California in 1849 in search of gold during the California Gold Rush. However, there are several synonyms that can be used to describe these miners. Some of these synonyms include gold rushers, prospectors, panners, diggers or gold-seekers. These terms all describe the same group of people who risked everything as they sought their fortunes in California. Some even simply use the term "miners". Today, forty niner is mostly used to describe a member of the San Francisco 49ers football team, as the number 49 is traditionally associated with California's gold rush era.
