Framboesia is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pertenue bacterium. The disease is commonly known as yaws. Some synonyms for the word framboesia include contagious ulcerative yaws, pian, parangi, or bouba. The infection occurs mostly in tropical and subtropical regions in poor hygiene conditions. The prolonged presence of this disease can cause deformities, disability, and severe joint pain. The bacterium spreads through direct contact with an infected person or objects, such as clothing or bedding. Effective treatment for framboesia is through administration of antibiotics and practicing good body hygiene. Regular mass treatment campaigns, health education, and improvement of living conditions are essential to eradicating yaws.
