Friar minor, also known as a Franciscan friar, is a religious title indicating membership in the Order of Friars Minor. This order was established by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century with the focus on living a simple and humble life. The Franciscan friars are popularly called Grey Friars because of the colour of their traditional habit. Other synonyms for friar minor include Little Brothers, Friars of the Sack and Greyfriars. The Franciscan friars take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience in service to the church and the community. Their lives are dedicated to prayer, penance, and assistance to the poor and vulnerable in society.
