Gaetano Donizetti was one of the most significant and celebrated Italian composers of the 19th century. Born in 1797, Donizetti's oeuvre included 73 operas, almost all of which were produced during his lifetime. Synonyms for Donizetti could include "bel canto composer," referencing his contribution to the Italian operatic tradition, or "opera buffa maestro," as many of his most beloved works were comedic in nature. Donizetti was also noted for his use of vocal embellishments and his ability to create memorable melodies, leading some to refer to him as the "king of melody." Regardless of the synonym used to describe him, Donizetti's contributions to classical music continue to be lauded and celebrated to this day.
