The common name birthwort refers to its traditional use in aiding childbirth, while the term pipevine is derived from the fact that the long, tubular flowers form a shape similar to a pipe. Dutchman's pipe also refers to the shape of the flower, which resembles a tobacco pipe, while serpentary alludes to its use as a treatment for snakebites.
