Genus Banksia is a group of flowering plants native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Among the synonyms for this genus are Isostylis, Banksiastrum, and Dryandra. Isostylis, once considered a separate genus, has recently been reclassified as a subgenus of Banksia. Banksiastrum is an obsolete synonym that was once used to describe Banksia species with compound inflorescences. Dryandra, another obsolete synonym, was once used to describe Banksia species with toothbrush-like flower spikes and distinctive foliage. Despite these various names, all species within the Genus Banksia are characterized by their unique and striking flower spikes which have evolved to attract a variety of pollinators such as birds, insects, and mammals.
