Genus Budorcas commonly refers to the Himalayan species of large ungulate mammals, also known as takins. There are currently two recognized species within the Budorcas genus: the Mishmi Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) and the Tibetan or Golden Takin (Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi). Synonyms for the genus Budorcas include Budorcas Wardi, Budorcas Makarovi, and Chaetomorpha taxes. These distinctive animals have a thick, shaggy coat that protects them from the cold climate of the Himalayas. They are herbivorous and found at high altitudes, often inhabiting alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and dense forests. Despite being an important cultural symbol in some regions, takins are facing escalating threats from habitat destruction and hunting.
