Genus Carcharias is a taxonomic classification for a group of large, predatory sharks commonly known as the sand tiger sharks. These sharks primarily inhabit shallow waters and are found worldwide in warm temperate and tropical seas. Although commonly referred to as sand tiger sharks, these sharks are also known under several other synonyms including spotted ragged-tooth shark, grey nurse shark, and ground shark. The name sand tiger shark refers to their habit of swimming near the surface and their fierce appearance, with long, sharp teeth protruding from their jaws. Despite being apex predators, sand tiger sharks are considered a vulnerable species due to overfishing and habitat loss.
