Genus Cercis, commonly known as the Eastern Redbud, is a type of small deciduous tree that is native to North America. Being a popular ornamental plant, it has several synonyms for its scientific name such as C. canadensis, C. reniformis and C. siliquastrum. The Eastern Redbud is a member of the pea family, Fabaceae, and is often recognized for its pink/ purple flowers that bloom in early spring. The species is also known to produce edible pods and nutritious seed. Admired for its aesthetic appeal, the Cercis plant has several uses including, landscaping, woodwork, and even medicine.
