Genus Cistus, commonly known as rockrose, is a group of flowering plants within the family Cistaceae. Sometimes, it is also referred to as the Sunrose family. The genus Cistus has numerous synonyms, including Halimium, Cistusella, Ladanum, and Fumana. Halimium is a synonym derived from the Greek word "halimos," meaning salty, as these plants were often found growing near the sea. Cistusella is a diminutive form for Cistus, and Ladanum comes from the resin exuded by the plants. The name Fumana, on the other hand, refers to the smoke-like hairs on the leaves of some species. Despite having various synonyms, these plants are highly valued for their ornamental qualities, herbal properties, and ecological significance.
