Genus Colinus refers to a group of birds primarily found in the Americas. The term Colinus has three synonyms, which are Lophortyx, Cyrtonyx, and Oreortyx. Lophortyx is a genus of birds native to North and Central America, which includes the California quail, Gambel's quail, and scaled quail. Cyrtonyx, on the other hand, comprises three species of birds commonly referred to as the Montezuma quail, Ocellated quail, and bearded quail. Oreortyx is a genus of birds known as the Mountain quails, mainly found in the western United States and Mexico. These synonyms, although representing different species, are part of the same family of birds, colloquially known as quails.
