Genus Coronilla, also commonly known as crown vetch, is a species of flowering plants within the Fabaceae family. Some synonyms for this plant genus include Securigera, which refers to the former name of the coronilla plant before it was reclassified, and Sphærolobium, which is a descriptor based on the spherical shape of the seeds that this plant produces. The plant is also known by the common names of "purple crown vetch" and "purple coronilla." Genus Coronilla is often used for erosion control and as a cover crop, due to its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil and rapidly spread through underground rhizomes.
