Genus Dermochelys, commonly known as leatherback sea turtles, are the only living species in the family Dermochelyidae. These unique creatures are known for their large size, leather-like shell, and lack of bony plates, making them distinct from other sea turtle species. As the largest living turtle on earth, the Dermochelys genus has many synonyms including leatherback turtle, leather turtle, and lute turtle.
Other popular synonyms for the genus Dermochelys include leatherhead turtle, trunkback turtle, and thickshell turtle. Many of these synonyms stem from the physical characteristics of the species, such as the thick, leathery skin that covers their shell. Despite their tough exterior, leatherback sea turtles are considered critically endangered due to pollution, habitat loss, and other threats.
