The genus Diomedea, which comprises the albatrosses, has several synonyms. Some of these include: Thalassarche, Phoebastria, and Diomedinae. The name Thalassarche was coined in 1854 and is derived from the Greek words 'thalassa' meaning sea and 'archos' meaning ruler. Phoebastria, on the other hand, was derived from the Greek word 'phoebos' meaning shining and 'aster' meaning star, and was first used in 1930. The Diomedinae classification was used during the late 1800s, and was named after the Greek mythological character Diomedes. Despite these different synonyms, all refer to the same group of large, oceanic birds that are known for their impressive wingspans and long lifespans.
