Genus Liopelma refers to a group of frog species that are endemic to New Zealand. There are two known species of this genus, namely Liopelma archeyi and Liopelma hamiltoni. The common name for these frogs is "New Zealand frog" or "Archey's frog." Synonyms for the term Genus Liopelma include Liopelmella, Sabatinca, and Leiopelma. These small, nocturnal amphibians are highly valued living fossils because they have barely changed over millions of years. The Genus Liopelma is especially important for conservation efforts due to their classification as threatened with extinction. Despite being one of the oldest frog lineages in the world, these frogs face significant threats to their survival, including habitat loss, disease, and introduced predators, such as rats.
