Genus Molothrus is a genus of birds in the family Icteridae. These birds are commonly known as cowbirds, as they are known for their habit of laying their eggs in the nests of other species, and allowing those birds to raise their young. Other common synonyms for the Genus Molothrus include the brown-headed cowbird, the shiny cowbird, the bronzed cowbird, and the screaming cowbird. Each species has unique characteristics, but all cowbirds share some common traits, including a relatively small size, a slender bill, and a distinctive glossy appearance in males. Despite their unusual behavior, cowbirds have adapted well to living in close proximity to humans, and can be found throughout much of North and South America.
