Genus Nabalus is a group of flowering plants commonly known as rattlesnake-root or white lettuce. It comprises of about 20 species found mostly in North America, belonging to the family Asteraceae. Rattlesnake-root is a common name because the roots were used in traditional medicine to treat snakebites. Other synonyms for Genus Nabalus include rabbit tobacco, conehead lettuce, skunk lettuce and pearly everlasting. The plants have long, thin leaves and flowers that are usually white or light purple in color. The species is known for its bitter taste and is often used as a substitute for lettuce in salads. Its medicinal properties are still being investigated by researchers.
