Genus Nimravus is a prehistoric feline that existed over 28 million years ago during the Oligocene epoch. This extinct animal is also known as "saber-toothed cats" or "false saber-toothed cats". It was named after its long, saber-like canine teeth which were longer and thinner than those of their descendants, such as the Smilodon.
Other common synonyms for Genus Nimravus include Hoplophoneus, Dinictis, and Eusmilus. Hoplophoneus was similar in appearance to Nimravus, but had shorter and stockier limbs. Dinictis resembled a small lion and was one of the first cats to evolve in North America. Eusmilus had a more slender and flexible body compared to Nimravus, but also possessed a pair of long canines.
