Genus Petromyzon, more commonly known as lampreys, is a primitive jawless fish. There are a variety of synonyms for this genus depending on the geographical location. In Europe, lampreys are commonly referred to as "nine-eyed eels", "riversnakes", and "bearded brook lampreys". In North America, some of the alternate names include "lampes", "lamper eels", and "croutes" among others. They are also referred to as "sea lampreys", "great sea lampreys", and "small sea lampreys" based on their habitat. Lampreys have a unique body structure and are considered to be important in the ecosystem as they work to control certain fish populations. Despite being often considered as pests or harmful to other fish stocks, they are a vital part of the aquatic ecosystem and have adapted well over millions of years.
