Genus Pholas, commonly known as the piddock, is a genus of saltwater clams that belong to the family Pholadidae. This genus has various synonyms, all of which are used interchangeably to refer to the same group of organisms. These synonyms include Acanthodonta, Borers, Clavagella, Coralliphaga, Diplodonta, Lithodomus, Mactramphalus, Martesia, Myospherella, Pholasella, Teredo, and Xylophaga. Each of these synonyms was used due to differences in morphology, behavior, and/or habitat.
