Genus Raphicerus, commonly known as the steenbok or Steinbuck, is a group of small antelopes found in southern and eastern Africa. There are several other names used to refer to these animals that are similar to the genus Raphicerus. These synonyms include Antilope, Nanotragus, and Rhebok. These small herbivores typically weigh less than 40 pounds and have short, reddish-brown fur. Despite their small size, they are very fast runners and are able to reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour. Steenboks are primarily solitary and rely on their sharp eyesight and excellent hearing to avoid predators. They feed on grasses and other vegetation and are important prey animals for many African carnivores.
