Genus Tayassu is a grouping of four species of pig-like mammals that are primarily found in Central and South America. These species are commonly referred to as peccaries or javelinas. Although all four species belong to the same genus, they have slightly different physical and behavioral characteristics. Some synonyms for the genus Tayassu include the white-lipped peccary, the collared peccary, and the Chacoan peccary. In addition, the genus Tayassu is sometimes referred to as the New World pigs, or simply as peccaries. Each of these terms can be used interchangeably depending on the context and the specific species being referred to.
