Gmelinite, an uncommon mineral, is a zeolite that occurs in volcanic rocks and in sediments. Synonyms for Gmelinite include Gmelin's zeolite, so called after Christian Gmelin who in the 17th century discovered the first natural occurrence of Gmelinite. It is also referred to as natrogmelinite, paragmelinite, and thomsonite-Ca, as it often occurs in association with these minerals. Gmelinite has a unique crystal structure and sometimes appears as a small white or pale-colored crystal. Other synonymous terms that are often used interchangeably with Gmelinite include Gmelinite-Ca, Gmelinite-Na, and Gmelinite-K. Despite being uncommon, Gmelinite is widely used in water purification and other industrial processes.
