The Golgi apparatus, also known as the Golgi body or Golgi complex, is a complex organelle that plays a crucial role in the cellular secretory pathway. It can also be referred to as the Golgi complex, Golgi system, or simply Golgi. This organelle is named after the Italian biologist Camillo Golgi who first discovered it in the late 19th century. Other synonyms for the Golgi body include the Golgi apparatus, Golgi apparatus, and Golgi stacks. The Golgi is made up of a series of flattened membrane-bound compartments, each with a distinct set of functional enzymes that work together to modify, sort, and package proteins and lipids for transport to other parts of the cell or outside of it.
