Gopherus Agassizii, also known as the desert tortoise, is a species of tortoise found in the southwestern United States. This tortoise has several synonyms, including Agassiz's desert tortoise, Mohave desert tortoise, and Sonoran desert tortoise. The Gopherus Agassizii is a herbivorous reptile and can live up to 80 years in captivity. This species plays a crucial role in the desert ecosystem by helping in seed dispersal and vegetation control. Unfortunately, their population has decreased due to habitat loss, disease, and illegal trade. As a result, the Gopherus Agassizii is now a protected species under federal and state law.
