In some areas of the United States, they are also referred to as land beavers or furrowers due to their burrowing habits. In certain Southern regions, they are called yelpers because of their tendency to make a yelping sound when surprised. Other synonyms for groundhogs include marmots, which are similar-looking rodents found in mountainous areas, and red gophers, a term commonly used in the Western United States.
