Haematoxylum is a botanical term used for a genus of trees that belong to the legume family. The more common name of this genus is logwood. The tree is native to Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The heartwood of the tree is used in the production of dyes which are used to color fabrics and other materials. There are a few synonyms for the word haematoxylum which are commonly used such as bloodwood, campeche, and palo de tinto. Bloodwood is used because the heartwood of the trees produces a red dye that was once used to simulate blood for theatrical purposes. Campeche is named after the Mexican state of the same name where the tree is found, while palo de tinto essentially translates to "wood for dyeing.
