Hallux refers to the big toe in humans and other primates. There are various synonyms used for hallux, such as great toe, first digit, big digit, and great toe digit. In some medical circles, it is called the digitus pedis and in layman's term, the great toe is referred to as the "thumb toe." In anatomy textbooks, it is labeled as digit I, or the phalanx of the big toe. This toe plays a key role in maintaining balance and stability while walking. Hallux is also the target site for various medical conditions like hallux valgus (bunion), hallux rigidus (osteoarthritis of the big toe), gout, and turf toe.
