HD-DVD, a short-lived high-definition optical disc format that was discontinued in 2008, had a few synonyms. It was also referred to as High Definition Digital Versatile Disc, Advanced Optical Disc, and High-Definition DVD. These terms were used interchangeably to describe the HD-DVD format, which was initially developed as a rival to Blu-ray. HD-DVD discs were capable of storing high-definition video and audio content, but the format failed to gain widespread adoption among consumers, resulting in its eventual demise. Today, Blu-ray is the dominant high-definition optical disc format, while digital streaming services continue to grow in popularity.
