The Hemizygos Vein is a large vein that runs along the left side of the spine and drains blood from the lower back and abdomen. Although it is commonly referred to as the Hemizygos Vein, it has several other synonyms, including the Semiazygos Vein, the Accessory Hemiazygos Vein, and the Left Superior Lumboperitoneal Vein. These synonyms are used interchangeably to describe the same vein, with the Semiazygos Vein referring to the larger vein that joins the Hemizygos Vein at the level of the ninth or tenth thoracic vertebrae, while the Accessory Hemiazygos Vein drains the lower intercostal spaces on the left side of the spine.
