The Hognosed skunk, also known as the rooter skunk, is native to Central and North America. Synonyms for this species include the white-nosed coati, Spilogale gracilis, and cone-nosed skunk. The Hognosed skunk is easily recognized by its unique snout, which it uses to dig for insects, rodents, and roots. This skunk is smaller than the common striped skunk, and has a distinctive black and white striped coat. Interestingly, when threatened, the Hognosed skunk will first try to intimidate its attackers by arching its back, raising its tail, and stomping its feet. If these tactics fail, it will emit a foul-smelling spray, much like other skunk species.
