The hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) is a marine mammal that inhabits the Arctic Ocean and adjacent seas. It has a distinctive "hood" of bluish-grey skin on its head that it inflates during mating displays and when threatened. Other synonyms for the hooded seal include "bladder-nosed seal" due to its flexible nose sac and "floppy-eared seal" because of its large, floppy ears. In Inuktitut, the Inuit language spoken in the Arctic, the hooded seal is called "natsilingmiutut" which means "seal with the large nose". These synonyms help describe the unique characteristics of this fascinating Arctic animal.
