Hoosgow is a slang term used to refer to jail or prison. It is also commonly known as the clink, the big house, the pen, the slammer, or the joint. Busted, nabbed, cuffed, or jailed are also synonyms of hoosgow. When someone is arrested, they are often taken to the slammer or the pokey. The term hoosgow originated from a Mexican-Spanish word "juzgao" which means a courthouse or jail, used during the Old West era. It has been used in popular culture since the 1930s in movies and TV shows, and even in modern-day slang. Regardless of the term used, they all mean the same thing- behind bars.
