The iliofemoral ligament, also known as the "Y" ligament, is a strong ligament that connects the ilium bone (part of the pelvis) to the femur bone. It provides stability to the hip joint and prevents hyperextension. Other terms used to describe the iliofemoral ligament include the anterior ligament of the hip joint, the ligamentum inguinale, or the pubofemoral ligament (since it also attaches to the pubic bone). Regardless of the name, this ligament plays a crucial role in maintaining stability and preventing injury to the hip joint. Injuries to the iliofemoral ligament can result in hip dislocations or other hip joint problems.
