Improvised explosive device (IED) is a term used to describe a homemade explosive device. There are many synonyms for IED, such as roadside bomb, homemade bomb, pipe bomb, pressure cooker bomb, and nail bomb. These devices can be made from readily available materials such as fertilizer, gasoline, and propane gas. The danger of IEDs is the unpredictability of their construction and the difficulty in detecting them. These bombs have been used in many conflicts around the world, including the Iraq War and in terrorist attacks. Military and law enforcement personnel are tasked with finding and disabling IEDs to protect the public and maintain safety and security.
