The river has various synonyms in different languages. In Sanskrit, the river is called Sindhu, while Persians and Arabs referred to it as Hind or Hindustan. In Punjabi, it is known as Satluj, whereas in Urdu, it is called Darya-e-Sindh. In Sindhi, it is commonly called Abasin or Mehran, which means "The River of Love". The river is also referred to as Mahi, which means "Great Water". Regardless of the synonym, the Indus River remains a vital part of the cultural and historical heritage of South Asia.
